The following tutorial will show how to create a portrait of a woman (Boguslawa Kowalska in Bogusław Kowalski’s studio, Warsaw, Poland). It shows how to create a realistic portrait, how to mask the face and alter it to show contours, how to create an edge treatment and how to add a background by using Photoshop’s fill tools.
What You Will Need
Open Adobe Photoshop, activate the New Document icon at the top of the screen, and create a new document that is 1600 x 1200 pixels. A Photoshop template is available for this tutorial but you can easily create a new document as well.
Using the Pen tool, draw a vertical line at the top of your document that is slightly above the top of your canvas. Create another line that is below the bottom of your canvas at the end of this vertical line.
Using the Magic Wand tool and picking a small selection of that vertical line, copy the selection and paste it back to the canvas as a new layer. Do the same for the bottom line.
Switch to the Brush tool, select the foreground color, white in this tutorial, and paint a vignette or mask on the selection so that the selection is slightly darkened.
Place your cursor in the Options bar, switch to Select > All Layers and fill the top and bottom line with the same color as the mask. Turn off the visibility for the lines on the canvas.
Name this layer Mask.
Using the Pen tool, draw a free-form line on the left of your canvas. Copy and paste the selection back to the new layer above the mask and name this layer Portrait.
Using the Brush tool, create a soft white color with a small amount of opacity, about 20%. Using a soft, round brush, paint a contour on your portrait layer. Paint over the main area of the face, starting from the tip of your nose, extending to the tip of your mouth and down to the bottom of your jawline.
Switch to the Brush tool, select Foreground color, white. Turn off the visibility for the layer called Portrait. With the Brush tool, paint over the neckline and hairline. Leave a little of the contour line around the shoulders to highlight it but do not paint the shoulders.
