## Using Photoshop for Greetings
Greetings are very much like photos in that both are worth framing. However, not all photos are great likenesses of the person in the frame. Some photos capture someone’s best expressions or highlight their overall appearance. Other photos are more detailed and have the subject’s best features highlighted.
Greetings are close to a photo-like format, except that the subject may not look directly into the camera. Often, a greeting card consists of a drawing of the subject, a photo of the drawing, and a statement or poem about the subject. The addition of a digital background or border is common. Keep the size of the greeting card small, because it doesn’t have to be a showpiece.
This chapter has several practical examples to help you with your own greeting card making.
You can find software programs to design and print greetings cards at many computer and printing store websites. However, this book doesn’t cover those programs because they vary by platform. This book focuses on Photoshop, which provides the best features for working with personal photos and greeting cards.
Photoshop Elements isn’t a complete solution for greeting card making, but it can do a lot. If you have Photoshop Elements, you’re ready to create greeting cards. If you don’t have it, you can download it from Adobe.com (www.adobe.com).
## Starting with the Basics
The simplest way to create a greeting card is to start with a photo. After you choose a picture or make one yourself, follow these steps:
1. **If the photo isn’t already organized, create a new Photoshop document.**
2. **Select the photo and then choose File** ⇒ **Open.**
3. **In the Open dialog box, navigate to the location of the photo and then click Open.**
Photoshop adds the photo to the document window.
4. **If you want the background of the card to look like a solid color, click the Solid Color icon at the bottom of the Layers palette.**
A color selector box opens so that you can select a background color.
To change the color of the paper or card stock, use the Color Picker tool.

You can also create custom brushes in Photoshop. Choose File > New > Brush. In the Brush Settings menu, select Filter and select Convert to Brush. Then, select New Artistic from the Brush Style menu to create an artistic or non-photorealistic brush.
To apply a custom brush, click on the Brush Control Bar at the bottom of your Photoshop window. Choose Filter > Blur > Sharpen to sharpen or blur an image. Finally, click Filter > Composite > Hue/Saturation to move the colors around.
